Light is one of retail’s quiet constants. It is there, it works, and ideally it goes unnoticed. But for brick-and-mortar retail, it is taking on new relevance. Wherever the shopping experience is defined by atmosphere and quality of stay, light becomes a key design element.

The result is indoor lighting that feels more natural and respects the human rhythm.

In retail, human‑centric lighting can help products appear clear and appealing, make orientation easier, and create an atmosphere where customers and employees are happy to spend more time. In that sense, light becomes a quiet companion to the shopping experience.

The visual dimension of HCL concerns the eye’s physiological functions: orientation, attention, and adaptation to different light levels. Carefully placed accents create focal points that intuitively guide shoppers through the space without overwhelming them.

Color rendering plays a central role here. It determines how authentic and attractive products appear. Modern lighting systems can now present and fine‑tune colors with great precision. As a result, surfaces look more brilliant, freshness becomes more visible, and details stand out more clearly.

The right kind of light depends on the product. Baked goods benefit from warm tones that make them look golden brown and appetizing. Fish and fresh foods, by contrast, need a more neutral, clearer light so their quality can be shown convincingly.

Light has not only a visual effect, but also a biological one. It influences the circadian rhythm – the internal clock that regulates alertness, concentration, and recovery. As noted above, human-centric lighting recreates the natural course of daylight indoors: energizing in the morning, neutral throughout the day, and calming toward evening. 

For customers, this means a more pleasant transition from outside to inside. The light feels coherent and less stressful. For employees, who spend many hours in the store, this aspect is especially important. Lighting that is adapted to the course of the day could support performance and reduce fatigue. 

Studies show that combining NLC and HVAC can reduce HVAC energy consumption by up to 30 percent – in addition to the energy savings achieved by the lighting system itself.

Light creates atmosphere. It shapes whether a space feels inviting, safe, or exhausting. This emotional effect is difficult to measure, but in retail it is of central importance.

Human‑centric lighting aims to create environments where people feel comfortable. A balanced lighting mood can lower the threshold for entering a store, increase the willingness to browse, and extend dwell time. Enthusiasm is created not through effects, but through coherence.

Studies on the topic are scarce. But a comprehensive case study by TRILUX – one of Europe’s leading providers of professional lighting solutions – suggests that these effects are not purely subjective. In an eight‑month comparison of two nearly identical German supermarkets, dwell time increased by 21 percent in the store equipped with HCL. In calculated terms, customers spent around 18 more minutes in the store.

At the same time, total sales rose by 12 percent. Departments such as fruits and vegetables benefited especially strongly, as optimized color rendering made the products appear significantly more attractive. Perception of the HCL store was also different: the atmosphere was rated 35 percent better, and service quality was judged 23 percent higher.

Human‑centric lighting is not aimed only at customers. Employees spend many hours under artificial light – often for years. The case study shows that a holistic lighting design can have an effect here as well: fatigue declined, and sleep quality improved, especially during the winter months.

Over the long term, this had measurable consequences. The number of sick days fell by 35 percent. At the same time, customers perceived service quality much more positively – an effect that can be explained by employees feeling more motivated and more fit.

Human‑centric lighting is not a decorative add‑on or a short‑term sales tool. It is a strategic approach that requires precision, planning, and restraint. Too much dynamic change can be irritating, and poorly used spectra can distort products.

When implemented correctly, however, HCL works in the background – where atmosphere takes shape. In a retail environment increasingly defined by the quality of the experience, that can make all the difference.
